A woman was riding her horse down a trail. She was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to her that she was dead. She remembered dying, and that her horse had been dead for years. Se wondered where the trail was leading them. After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. A little farther along, the wall was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. There was a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. The woman and her horse walked toward the gate, and as they got closer, she saw a man at a desk by the gate. When she was close enough, she called out, "Excuse me, where are we?" "This is Heaven" the man answered. "Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" she asked. "Of course! Come in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up!" The man gestured, and the gate began to open. "Can my horse come in, too?" she asked. "Sorry, but we don't accept pets" the man said. At that, the woman turned back toward the road and continued the way they had been going.. The woman and her horse traveled along the trail for quite a while. They were getting very thirsty. At the top of another long hill, they came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate. The gate was open and resting on the ground. Wild flowers and a berry bush had grown around and through the gate. It looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. As they approached the gate, the woman saw a man inside, leaning against a tree, reading a book. Excuse me!" she called to the man. "Do you have any water?" "Yeah, sure," the man answered. "There's a pump right over there. Come on in!" "How about my horse?" the woman asked. "There is a cup and a bucket by the pump," the man told her. The woman dismounted and walked her horse through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a cup and a bucket beside it. She filled the bucket and offered it to her horse. Hel took a long drink and sighed. The woman filled the cup and drank. Then she walked her horse back toward the man who was leaning against the tree. "What do you call this place?" she asked. "This is Heaven."' he answered. "Well, that's confusing," she said. "The man back down the road said that place was Heaven, too!" "Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's hell." "Well, that's not right!" the woman said. "Doesn't it make you mad for them to lie like that?" The man grinned. "No. We're glad they screen out folks who would leave their best friends behind." |
